Ranking System

Comparing players on their average, win percentage or number of wins does not always give an accurate reflection of the players' performances; Over the course of a season, players will play differing numbers of games, some may play more at home than away and some may win all of their games in a lower division. The aim of the ranking system is to provide a means to compare players despite these differences.

The details of how the system works are outlined below. It may seem a little complex at first, but once you understand the concept of the system there's nothing too complex about it. Hopefully you will see that it enables us to compare all of the players in the league on a more even footing.

Please note:  This system is not official! It is purely an experiment to see how a ranking system could be used to compare players over the course of a season.

How Ranking Points Are Calculated

The principle is simple: Assign points for each match played according to certain criteria and then make some adjustments to account for other factors.

Points are gained per game as follows:

Home Player
Away Player
Game Result

Player Wins Game
10 points
12 points
Player Loses Game
5 points
6 points
Player Draws Game
7.5 points
9 points

Player Scored 2000+ Points

Player Scored 3000+ Points
1.5 points
2.25 points
Player Scored 4000+ Points

Other Factors

Player Was Against The Break
0.5 points
0.75 points
Opponent Was In Division Two
total points * 0.9
total points * 0.9

The total ranking points for each player are then totalled up, averaged and then adjusted according to how many games that player has played:

Average Ranking Points Per Game = Total Ranking Points / No. of Games Played

Games Played Adjustment = 100 - (2 * (Matches Available - No. of Games Played))

Ranking Score = Average Ranking Points Per Game * Games Played Adjustment

  • Johnny scored 10.8 ranking points in this game ((10 + 2) * 0.9)
  • Theresa scored 6.75 ranking points in this game ((0.75 + 6 + 0.75) * 0.9)

Here are examples of how the ranking score is calculated:

Brian Loynes has won 4 out of 5 games against division one opponents, averaging 1,844 per game, scoring 53.75 ranking points in total. His ranking score is 795, calculated as follows:
(53.75 / 5) * (100 - (2 * (18 - 5))) = 10.75 * 74 = 795

Mark George has won 8 out of 10 games against division two opponents, averaging 2,805 per game, scoring 98.775 ranking points in total. His ranking score is 790, calculated as follows:
(98.775 / 10) * (100 - (2 * (20 - 10))) = 9.8775 * 80 = 790

Jules Dale has won 4 out of 7 games against division one opponents, averaging 2,030 per game, scoring 70.75 ranking points in total. His ranking score is 788, calculated as follows:
(70.75 / 7) * (100 - (2 * (18 - 7))) = 10.1 * 78 = 788

* Note that as Mark George plays in division two, he has 2 more games available to him than the division one players, hence his Matches Available is 20 instead of 18.
